Grado to Grandas Salime (or A Fonsagrada)

* Stay in albergue or pension/hotels as you prefer

Day 1 / Grado - Salas (22 km.) with a major climb from the start after Grado. Otherwise, the day offers, among other things, a couple of smaller villages, rural surroundings and halfway through a 1,000-year-old monastery with the possibility of overnight stays, if you want to start with a few shorter hiking days in the moderately hilly terrain. Every day with optional yoga and relaxation (30-60 min).

Day 2 / Salas - Tineo (20 km.) The route leads further through forests and lush landscapes to Tineo, which together with Grado and Salas are some of the very few larger villages  west from Oviedo. Again with an increase from the morning.

Day 3 / Tineo - Børres (16 km.) We continue through the hilly and rural Asturias, which gives a taste of what awaits the following days, where the Primitivo shows itself from its most spectacular and challenging side with lots of altitude meters, magnificent scenery and sometimes far to civilization.

Day 4 / Borres (above Hospitales) - Berducedo (24.5 km.) After Borres, there are two variants of the route. One option is a nice and relatively straightforward stretch to Pola de Allande (13 km.), after which the route continues with a smooth ascent to Puerto del Palo (19.5 km.). The second option is the original route "Hospitales", which is a total of 4.5 km. shorter and more challenging. The Hospitales variant also cuts off the possibility of catering and accommodation in Pola de Allande.

Day 5 / Berducedo - Grandas de Salime (20.5 km.) The day starts right up to the first hour to La Mesa, which is a small town, with a handful of houses at an altitude of 950 meters. From the café in La Mesa, we hike 250 meters up to a fantastic view of the river Navia, from where we start a longer but manageable descent of 1,200 meters down to a hydroelectric dam that divides the river. On the other hand, it goes smoothly uphill again, and soon it is time for another pit stop/café visit with wild views, before we walk the last stretch to Grandas de Salime at 500 meters altitude. Maybe you continue the next day 25.5 km. to A Fonsagrada. Otherwise, the trip goes to Lugo and further back.

  5-6 days of hiking / 103-128 km.

The Camino Primitivo in the mountains of Asturias and Galicia, like the Camino del Norte, is an exciting alternative to the French route. The "original" route (321 km.) offers a wealth of nature experiences and unusual views. Many start in Oviedo, and you can choose to walk all the way to Santiago, but especially after a few days and the stretch to Grandas de Salime is a spectacular experience with unique landscapes. The primitivo is for the easy-to-train and a challenge for most people.

Quite a few switch to the Primitivo after walking the Camino del Norte to Llanes, Villaviciosa or Gijón. Alternatively, it is recommended to start in Grado (25 km. after Oviedo) ready for a great hiking experiences in magnificent landscapes until Grandas de Salime.
